Salinity in Wakool

Wakool River Offtake Regulator08 Dec 2009

State Water today advised water users on the Wakool River from the confluence of Merran Creek and Wakool River to the confluence of Wakool River and Edward River to expect an increase in salinity levels during next few days.

Ned Hamilton, Water Delivery Manager southern valleys said the water released to the Wakool system from mid-September has almost reached the end of Wakool system where the salinity level is currently high.

The continuing higher flows of low salinity water in the Wakool River passing Coonamit Bridge and Meran Creek should help to dilute the higher salinity water in Stony Crossing area.

On 7 December salinity levels at Coonamit Bridge and Meran creek were 900 EC and 250 EC respectively.

The current flows in the Edward River at the Wakool junction should further help to alleviate the high salinity issues in the Stony Crossing area.

Water users in the Stony Crossing area are advised to be mindful of the increase in salinity levels when planning their operations during the next few weeks.
