Countdown to Burrendong construction
3 March 2010
The countdown to construction at Burrendong has begun with stage one construction contractors set to be onsite from Monday, 15 March 2010.
As the manager for the $28 million flood upgrade, State Water organised a meeting between Macmahon Contractors and the Wellington Council as part of their ongoing communication with the local authority.
State Water CEO George Warne said preparations for stage one of the project were progressing well.
“It is pleasing to see this important project reaching the construction phase,” Mr Warne said.
“We anticipate surrounding communities of Wellington will reap economic benefits from this investment through the purchase of supplies such as fuel and hire of plant, equipment and resources.”
The road across the dam wall will be closed for public safety during construction from Monday 15 March 2010.
Stage one of the safety upgrade will involve raising the main dam wall and one of the two saddle dam walls by 1.8 meters and constructing a new saddle dam adjacent to the existing, Mr Warne said.
The upgrade works will ensure the dam will able to retain water behind the wall in an extreme large flood event and is compliant with the NSW Dam Safety Committee’s requirements.
Stage two of the upgrade is still in the investigation phase and will involve strenthening of the existing spillway.
Construction on stage one is scheduled to be completed by December 2010, with the entire project set for completion in late 2011.
