New bridge to link community during upgrade

The NSW Government today confirmed a new bridge will be built across the Lachlan River to ensure continued access for residents during a $31 million upgrade of Wyangala Dam.

NSW Minister for Water Phil Costa said the community working group, including members of council and the public have agreed on an alternative route across the Lachlan River downstream of Wyangala Dam.

“In July 2009, I ordered an independent review to be undertaken by the Hon. Ian Armstrong OBE to determine a suitable access route across the river can be maintained throughout construction,” Minister Costa said.

“I am delighted to confirm a new bridge will be built at Old Trout Farm Road to link residents either side of the Lachlan River prior to the closure of dam crest road –  a great outcome for the Wyangala community.

“The Wyangala Dam upgrade is a major investment in the region’s infrastructure, and the NSW Government is working closely with the community to minimise the impact of this vital work.

“The decision to build a bridge to ensure convenient access is maintained across the river was made in agreement with community members and local councils.

“On top of the $31 million investment in upgrading the dam, the NSW Government will invest additional funding in building this new bridge.

“Construction work on the new bridge will start in early 2012, and the bridge will be up and running before the road across Wyangala Dam is closed – so the community’s access will be maintained at all times.

“When the dam upgrade is complete, the bridge will remain as a permanent asset for the community – this is great news for local residents and businesses.”

Minister Costa said the upgrade was progressing well, with the first stage now complete.

The Wyangala Dam upgrade includes:
• Raising the chute wall on the downstream spillway to ensure it can withstand the most extreme flood events
• Raising the existing spillway radial gates 1.4m higher and installing a brake locking system to the gates
• Raising the dam crest by 1.8m by provision of an upstream parapet wall

“State Water has completed raising the chute wall on the downstream spillway, on budget and ahead of schedule, with the $31 million upgrade on track for completion in 2014,” Minister Costa said.

“Already, the project has employed 18 workers and benefited local suppliers.

“The Wyangala project is one of seven dam safety upgrades being completed as part of the NSW Government’s $350 million investment in ensuring dams can withstand the most extreme conditions.

“These projects will inject millions of dollars into regional economies through the purchase of local goods and services, and result in large-scale job creation.”
