Road closed for Hume upgrade
6 April, 2010
The State Water road across the Hume Dam wall will be closed to the public from Tuesday, 6 April 2010 during construction for upgrade works occurring at the dam.
The Hume Dam works are part of dam improvement programs in NSW, SA and Victoria, with NSW State Water upgrading seven other dams to improve their capacity to withstand extreme flood and earthquake events.
State Water Senior Project Manager Mel Jackson said the construction of filter drainage works on the wall means the road needs to be closed to the public for safety purposes.
“State Water is committed to undertaking these works with the highest respect to the safety of the public and the people involved,” Mr Jackson said.
“For this reason, the road across the top of the dam wall will be closed to the public during construction until further notice.”
Access to the existing park facilities and viewing platform on the NSW side will be retained during the upgrade works, Mr Jackson said.
The Albury-Wodonga community is expected to benefit economically from the $60 million works through the purchase of supplies and hire of subcontractors.
The works will be funded by the Commonwealth, NSW, Victorian and South Australian governments through the Murray-Darling Basin Authority.
Hume Dam is safe for day-to-day operation and can safely manage a flood significantly greater than the largest flood on record.
The upgrade works will not change the storage capacity or outflows from the dam under normal conditions.
Further information on the Hume Dam upgrade is available on the State Water website www.statewater.com.au under the Major Projects section.
