MEDIA RELEASE
Country Labor Duty MLC for Burrinjuck, Mick Veitch has welcomed the awarding of the $340,000 tender for the concept and detailed design for a new road and bridge near Wyangala Dam.
Aurecon Australia Pty Ltd was awarded the tender following a decision by the Wyangala working party to build a bridge to link Darby’s Falls and Trout Farm Road as an alternative access to the existing road across the dam wall.
Mr Veitch said this was an important step in meeting the needs of the community before and after the safety upgrade of Wyangala Dam.
“The new bridge and road will ensure the community has continued access across the Lachlan River throughout the flood security upgrade,” Mr Veitch said.
“In addition to the $31 million dam safety upgrade, the Keneally Government will invest an estimated $12 million to build this bridge.”
Construction on the new bridge will start in early 2012, and the bridge will be up and running before the road across the top of the dam is closed for construction on the crest.
Mr Veitch said tenders have also been called for the detailed design of the gate raising and locking system, with the contract expected to be awarded early in 2011.
The Wyangala Dam safety upgrade is being managed by State Water Corporation and involves three separate phases:
• Raising the chute wall on the downstream spillway to ensure it can withstand the most extreme flood events
• Installing a gate raising and locking system
• Constructing a parapet wall to raise the dam crest by 1.8m
State Water has completed the chute wall raising stage on time and on budget.
The project is scheduled for completion in 2014.
