Walking for Water Week
18 October 2010
State Water is recognising National Water Week (October 17-23) by joining WaterAid’s national fundraising initiative, Walk4Water.
11 staff members from across the organisation have pledged to walk 10,000 steps a day, to symbolise the distance it takes for many people across the world to access clean water.
The State Water team has so far been very successful in securing funds to contribute to the cause, and are currently sitting within the top 3 teams on the leaderboard.
State Water’s General Manager for Commercial Business, David Andersen is leading the charge within the organisation, and is currently the highest sponsored individual nation-wide.
Mr Andersen explained that Walk4Water creates awareness of the millions of less fortunate people who are required to walk long distances to provide clean water to their communities.
“In Australia, we are lucky to have clean drinking water readily available. In other countries, millions of people walk many kilometres to provide water for their families.
The Walk4Water is creating awareness of this issue, and is also an opportunity to get some exercise!”
Karen Bashford, State Water’s head office receptionist has enjoyed participating in the fundraiser, which has given her a new appreciation for people who are required to walk long distances for water.
“It requires planning my day carefully to make sure that I reach 10,000 steps. It really has made me stop and think about what people have to do to access something that so many of us take for granted on a daily basis” Ms Bashford said.
The Walk4Water runs throughout the entire month of October in conjunction with National Water Week. To learn more about the initiative or to help State Water win the competition for the most funds raised, please visit www.wateraidcommunity.org.au/statewater.
State Water owns, maintains, manages and operates major infrastructure to deliver bulk water to approximately 6,300 licensed water users on the state’s regulated rivers along with associated environmental flows.
