Blue-green algal alert lifted for Glennies Creek

30 September 2011

Glennies Creek DamState Water today lifted the previously issued high level blue-green algal alert for Glennies Creek Dam.

State Water spokesperson, Tony Webber, said that algae numbers have remained at low levels for two consecutive samples and the public warning could now be lifted.

However, Mr Webber said that algae numbers can alter dramatically with changes in conditions and it was still prudent for people to avoid water where algae is visually present or which had a strong odour.

“Blue-green algae is usually very obvious, appearing as green paint-like scums on the water and foreshore edges or clumps throughout the water and usually has a strong odour. This makes the water appear dirty, green or discoloured,” said Mr Webber.

“Blue-green algae may cause severe stomach upsets, nausea and skin irritation in both people and animals. Blue-green algae may contain toxins and boiling the water does not remove the toxins produced by the algae,” he said.

The Hunter New England Area Health Service advises people who believe they may have been affected by blue-green algae to seek medical treatment.

State Water will continue to monitor the dam and advise the public if the situation changes.
