Chaffey Dam is now more able to withstand an extreme flood following completion of the $13 million stage one flood capacity upgrade works.

The upgrade is one of seven State Water is undertaking throughout regional NSW, to enable the dams to withstand extreme floods.

State Water CEO George Warne said despite the dam spilling periodically throughout construction, the works were completed on time, on budget and without injury.

“Less than 12 months since construction commenced in June 2010 it is now complete, which is a credit to project contractors John Holland.

“John Holland was also able to engage eight local subcontractors, which, combined with 40 local suppliers and up to 35 people accommodated in the area at one time, means the local economy has benefited substantially from this project.

“The Tamworth community can be proud of their contributions to making Chaffey Dam even safer.”

Detailed design was carried out by URS Australia Pty Ltd and NSW Public Works were the construction supervisors for the upgrade works.

Following the joint announcement of stage two and augmentation in February, State Water is working through planning and approval processes before determining the specific program of works.

“State Water is well aware of possible issues arising from the new full supply level of an augmented Chaffey Dam.

“We will be in contact with those who may be affected in the coming months to work out the best options and mitigate any issues.”

A small ceremony will be held at the dam to recognise the completion of construction on stage one of the upgrade. Media are welcome to attend.
