Cudgegong receives environmental flow
1 December 2011
The riverine environment of the Cudgegong River immediately downstream of Windamere Dam will benefit from recent environmental flows as part of the Macquarie-Cudgegong water sharing plan.
The releases, which commenced last Thursday (24 November) were intended to replenish the upper reaches of the Cudgegong by delivering between 150 and 1500 megalitres per day at Rocky Water Hole.
The releases were scaled back Saturday morning (26 November) as weekend rain increased tributary flows and then increased as tributiary flows subsided Sunday morning, 27 November.
In the Cudgegong valley State Water works in consultation with the Cudgegong Valley Water Committee, the membership of which represents a variety of water user groups.
The environmental benefits include improved quality and access to habitat in those reaches of the river targeted, according to State Water Manager Water Delivery Dan Berry.
“All water sharing plans include an environmental component that ensure that when there is sufficient water available, releases are conducted to provide optimum environmental benefit,” he said.
“This release helped rejuvenate the river habitat in a variety of ways for both fish and flora, that will in turn enhance the overall ecological quality of that area of river.”
