Environmental flows planned for Murrumbidgee

10 June 2011

Burrinjuck Dam spillwaysState Water Corporation is expecting to begin releasing an environmental flow into the Murrumbidgee River totalling approximately 150GL from Tuesday, 14 June.

Releases from Burrinjuck and Blowering Dams will be held at about 30GL per day at Gundagai from Tuesday, while the river at Wagga Wagga is expected to start rising Wednesday but will remain below six metres at the Wagga Wagga gauge.

Anyone planning activities in or around the river during this release will need to be mindful of rising river levels and faster flowing water, State Water's Manager Water Delivery, Dan Berry confirmed today.

"We will be carefully monitoring the weather before and during the release to restrict river flows to a rate of up to 30GL per day at Gundagai," Mr Berry said.

"Weather permitting this rate will be maintained for up to eight days until the total order has been released.

"Once this water order is delivered, State Water will endeavour to reduce flows at a rate that will match natural river level fluctuations.”

The process is underway for notifying landholders downstream of the dams.
