The $65 million government funded CARM project involves technology and infrastructure upgrades in the Murrumbidgee valley to enhance water efficiency and improve delivery of water.

Almost 130 landholders attended information sessions between Tuesday and Friday last week (25-28 October) at Balranald, Hay, Narrandera, Darlington Point, Jerilderie, Collingullie and Gundagai.

More than 400 irrigators are included within the project area, a tri-government initiative, which will also fund for new water meters for irrigation pumps.

The CARM project features include investing in high-tech river monitoring equipment for more precise water delivery, and improved flood management operations. The investment in this technology is a world first for a river system.

Attendees at the drop-in information sessions spoke to project managers, inspected an example of one of the new meters and received an update on progress on the project, which is scheduled for completion by June 2012.

State Water’s water delivery manager Dan Berry, said the presence of senior management and customer field officers presented a unique opportunity for State Water customers.

“This latest round of information sessions presented an opportunity to keep abreast of the CARM project as well as raising other issues with State Water personnel on hand,” he said.

“This series of informal face-to-face sessions were well received, especially in centres like Balranald and Darlington Point and it was evident that this project has certainly generated considerable interest right along the Murrumbidgee valley.

“There was also valuable input for us regarding customer services and operational issues specific to the local areas.”
