Murrumbidgee environmental flows peak

18 June 2011

Burrinjuck Dam spillwaysHigh river flows due to environmental releases into the Murrumbidgee River downstream of Burrinjuck and Blowering Dams have peaked.

Landholders around Gundagai and Wagga have reported significant river rises since the releases commenced on Tuesday (14 June), though the height remained well below minor flood level.

River heights were expected to peak Friday night or early Saturday morning, though higher than normal flows will continue for up to five days.

State Water will continue to monitor the release rates, river levels, and weather forecasts so that the release meets the environmental objectives, while minimising inconvenience to landholders.

The flows temporarily overtopped the Tenandra Bridge near Gundagai, and some livestock were isolated behind the river's anabranches.

State Water reduced releases from both dams to allow the bridge to re-open as soon as possible. River levels around Gundagai are expected to fall over the next few days, but will remain high until early next week.

Landholders immediately downstream of the dams had been advised to make necessary precautions in the days before the releases commenced.
