Renewable energy projects
As part of our ongoing strategy to reduce operating costs and improve environmental performance State Water is managing solar and hydro power projects across regional NSW.
Solar power systems
Solar power systems allow State Water sites to operate independently from the electricity grid by generating enough power to run operations including regulator gates, fishway gates and radio communications.
Project: Muggabah and Merrimajeel offtake regulator solar power systems
Project cost: Approximately $1 million
Funding: Rivers Environmental Restoration Program
Installation: Two 110 watt solar power systems were installed
Dates: Commenced in 2010, completed 2011
Media releases:
- May 2011 Regulator sites now solar powered
- January 2010 State Water goes solar for site operation
Planned system installations
- Booberoi Weir
- Gonowila Weir
- Torriganny Weir
- Warren Weir
- Yallakool Weir
Hydro-electric power systems
Of the 20 major dams operated by State Water, more than half now have hydro-electric power stations installed.
Project: Lostock Dam turbines
Project cost: $400,000
Funding: Private sector investment
Installation: Two hydro-electric turbines
Dates: Commenced 2010, completed 2010
Media releases:
- August 2010 Economic and environmental wins from turbines
- August 2010 Pump installation improves security of supply
